Some interesting notes on trying to play music on my phone.
Even though everywhere seems to say the phone only plays .wma files, I can't get mine to play them. However, it plays .mp3 and .m4a files just dandy. This is great as I wasn't looking forward to converting my music to Microsoft .wma on my Macbook.
Also, I could only receive files from my phone and not send to it until I updated the firmware (Settings -> Phone Info -> Update Phone SW). Now everything works great -- file transfer, iSync.
Ringtones can be created by renaming an .mp3 file as a .qcp and saving it in the audio directory. It is picked up from there just fine. Use bluetooth file transfer for this.
Something else that is neat is playing videos. I can take a video, say a movie trailer, and using Quicktime export it to MPEG4 (176x144) and upload it to the video folder. Then I can watch it fullscreen (though you have to hold the phone sideways because it is widescreen) using the video player. It's really too small of a screen to be useful, but it's still cool. Here is the trailer for the movie 300 and the Daily Show (Nov. 15) formatted for the RAZR.
300 Movie Trailer [2 MB]
Daily Show 11/15 [25 MB]
Unzip and put in /MMC/DCIM/video on your phone. You can play them by going to Pictures and Videos -> My Videos -> External Memory.

i came across your blog when looking for help sending mp3's to my sprint razr. i can get it bluetooth-connected to my computer (XP SP2), and even initiate a file transfer. however, once i accept the push on the razr, i get an error on the PC-side saying that the razr does not support such file format.
did you send your mp3's as is?
thanks.
Comment from Dave:
Well, I'm using a Mac, but I did get the same problems on my Mac (not-supported file format) until I updated the firmware on my phone.
Comment from aaron:
I'm trying to play your Daily Show video on my phone. I have to put files directly on my SD card using a card reader because my phone isn't recognized by my PC. What folder do i put the Daily Show file in on my SD card so that I can watch it on my phone? (I assume it's the same file for me as it is for you)
Comment from Andrew:
help me please. im me at electric10890 thanks
Comment from Steven:
I saved an mp3 as-is into the audio folder using Bluetooth-Browse Device and it works just fine as a ringtone. Only problem is that it cannot be removed!! Any ideas?
Comment from Dave:
Steven, are you running the latest firmware. I saw people complaining about the same thing until they updated. Personally mine worked the other way (I could download but not upload) until I updated the firmware.
Comment from stu:
Appreciate you doing fixing up this plugin. I am a two month old iMac noob and just got the Sprint RAZR yesterday. You say to put the mp3 (renamed qcp) into the audio folder. which audio folder are you talking about? thanks in advance.
Comment from Dave T:
Im having the same problms, I can send files to my Sprint Razr and use them as ringtnes, but i cant delete them...
Comment from Dave T:
Does anyone know how to delete the ringtones?
Comment from vy:
um, how 't do you rename as a qcp file? 'cause i tried, but my pc isn't letting me. or is this something that can only be done on a mac?
Comment from astro:
you need to delete it while connected to your computer via bluetooth
Comment from John:
Has anyone figured out how to get bluetooth file transfer phone to phone to work on this phone?
Comment from Dave:

Comment from Brian:
Does anyone know what the file folders are used for? i.e. to store videos on the SD card, you put the them in /MMC/DCIM/video
So where do we put audio/mp3 files to listen to?
What are the other file folders for?
Comment from Aurash:
I converted an episode of Family guy to 3gp and put it in the DCIM/Video folder, but when i go back and try to play it on the phone, it just gives a loading icon and than freezes.
Help please...
Comment from Brian:
I just uploaded some of the youtube videos I've previously made and they turned out awesome! Very clear with good sound..
I also uploaded an episode of Lost. The quality was pretty poor, but still watchable. It only took up 24.7MB for a 45 minute video, so I can't complain too much. I bought a 2gig SD storage chip, so storage space isn't too much of a problem.
Now all I have to do is configure my Mac to be able to use iSync and let me use my cellphone as a modem.
Comment from Brian:
I've seen other people comment on similar things. Although I am far from expert, the answers I saw given are:
1. The file was too big and your system froze up. Delete the file and try again. If you can lower the size of the file, it might work.
2. You might have the wrong format of file/conversion bad. What audio did you put on the file?
3. You might have a problem with your storage chip. Could you have damaged it somehow? Are other files loading okay?
Try loading one of the files that he posted above and see how that works. If it does, it is either the size or the type of conversion done.
Comment from Geoff:
I got mp3's copied to my Sprint v3m, but cannot play them. When I press "Music", the phone starts to contact the Sprint Music Store, then gives an error that the SD card isn't formatted (not true, it's formatted and accepting files nicely).
1. How do I play my MP3's?
2. How do I bypass the Sprint Music Store?
3. (extra credit) How do I set up a folder structure in the phone like on my PC (folder name=CD title, folder contains the songs on that CD)?
Thanks
Comment from Brian:
You can't bypass the music store if you want to play songs (that you previously downloaded from your computer). When you first load the "Sprint Music Store" app, it gives you two tabbed screens...
"Store" & "Player". Select "Player" & "All My Music". That should then pull up all the music you loaded by song, artist, or genre.
As to the chip not being formatted, I don't know. I know there is an option to reformat your SD chip, but I don't know if that will help or make things worse.
As to the file structure, I've got a Mac... so I don't know if it would work the same. I go through bluetooth and the Mac shows the files & folders currently on the SD and allows "one click" creation of a new folder.
Comment from britt:
Hey, I've followed all of the instructions to get an mp3 on my phone...I ran the updates and everything but my computer is still saying that my phone will not accept the file type. Any suggestions? I'm getting frustrated because I've tried all of the advice on this site as well as 2 other sites and nothing is working :(
Comment from amy:
i had that formatting error & it was that i didn't have my card in all the way
Comment from carolita:
Hi! I just bought a razr v3m (the red one), and find that the ringers I download to it from vendors other than sprint (ahem) do not work! they are downloaded, but unassignable, and not appearing in the list of ringers assignable to contact, nor in the list of ringers assignable to alerts. Also, I cannot choose "none" in the ringtone list (meaning, the silent ringer for certain contacts whose calls I don't want disturbing me). I choose "none", click "save" and it just reverts to whatever ringer had been selected previously, never "none". Anyone have a solution? is this an issue with this phone, or is my particular handset defective? I've been advised by tech support to get a new phone, but obviously they rarely know what they're talking about (sadly). ANyone else have experience in this? Would love some advice before I go to the sprint store to exchange my phone -- perhaps I need to get a sanyo instead! (my old sanyo was so docile and compliant!) :)
Comment from aaron:
Does anyone know of a way to plug headphones into the razr? I have tried one of the usb converters on ebay and they do not appear to work with sprint firmware. I have also tried to listen to music through my bluetooth headset. This also does not work. So far I have only been able to play it through the speaker. Thanks--Aaron
Comment from griff:
Use tape to get a grip in the card and slide it out.
Comment from matt:
How did you update the firmware to work with a mac?
Comment from Rodya:
Hello, I have a sprint Razr, and I have bluetoothed music over as a ringtone, and they work fine. However, when trying to delete some files from the computer, it gives me a error that says "No such file" when I know there is a file because I just put it there! It can play the files as a ringtone, but when it comes to deleting them, It cant find them all of a sudden.
Can anyone help me?
Comment from Rodya:
Also, when trying to send files to the external memory via bluetooth, The pc gives me a error that says "Server Error" Can anyone help with that?
BTW: Im using a Windows XP Sp1 machine
Comment from Matt:
Ok I just bought a razrv3m (red) and I can copy music just fine to the memory card.
But I cant figure out how to transfer ringtones to the phone (stored on the memory card)
where should i put the .cpq files on the card so my phone will recognize them?
Comment from Matt:
Oh, and i dont have a bluetooth computer so i cant do it that way. I just have a memory card reader
Comment from g:
hey i did the same thing updated my firmware but i cant recieve anything to my phone through blue tooth or send stuff. how do you?
Comment from Robert:
Hi Carolita. I get the same thing that your talking about. I downloaded ringers from gritsandeggs (a sprint cingular only website) and thought that I would be able to use them for their purposes. However the original ringtons that the phone had come with seem to be the only ones that you can use. I didn't know why but the ringtones I got from that website never even gave me the "set as" option to use them. I'm not sure when, but about a week later i attempted trying it again and It actualy let me set it as the ringer of my choice. However I ran into another problem. When I tried calling my phone to see if it would play the ringer, all it did was vibrate. So I honestly have no idea why it does that but just so you knon im expieriecning the same diffuculties as you. Also I'm wondering if anyone would know how to take music from your itunes and transfer it to your MicroSD card to get it on your phone (sprint music store) then please let me know. Im new to this so any help would be appreciated.
Comment from Stephen:
Got a new razor v3m and BT headset. How do you make the music play through the headset?
I have seen something about profiles, but don't have one that says Headset, have that says Hands Free..????
Comment from JAMES:
Just a note: each RAZR is different i.e. i have a v3m unlocked from sprint and i can use mp3's and clips of songs in mp3 format to use as ringtones or listen to in my music player on the phone. Consequently my friend has a v3c from verizon and his only plays wma's and i cant figure out how to make ringtones for him yet. i used the cable at first but it is much easier and faster to use a SD card reader and copy the files right on to the card, doesnt require drivers, this is also how i upload pictures to my pc from my phone
P.S. i usually just plug it into the computer now for charging hehe.
Comment from Dave:
How did you get the mp3 file to be a ringtone file?
Comment from Julian:

Comment from James-learned my way:
okay its actually simple...or kinda. first u need itunes. then while the music is in itunes right click the song u want to convert so that the dropdown box appears. click convert song and the drag the converted song to the music folder on youre phone. i jus use a multiple media card reader from target to get my phone on the computer cost me 20. im not even gonna bother with connecting the computer to the4 phone by using a wire. pissed me off too much.

Did you ever get a reaply to your question. i am having the same problem. If you have the answer pls. email me. Tnx

Comment from Kristen:
I'm having similar problems to most of you all with the sprint razr v3m and bluetooth. I've paired my phone with my ibook and attempted to send an mp3 file.. it says "The target device claims it will not accept a file of the type you are trying to send." so i press send anyway and then once i press 'accept' on my phone to get the file it says there's a "failed connection".
I cannot get the files on the phone! I know many of you have had the same problem.. but there are no replies.
HELP! please.
thanks
Comment from w:
that is because the ringtone format has to be mp3 not acc or wma
Comment from Z:
Aaron - I am running into the same problem with my bluetooth - did you ever get an answer? Thanks in advance.
Comment from Sprint User:
Has anyone successfully gotten their Sprint RAZR V3m to connect as a modem with their Mac? I previously had a Samsung A920 and successfully used it as a wireless modem with my PowerBook.
The other day, I went and upgraded to the Motorola RAZR V3m, and I can't set it to get my PowerBook to connect to the internet via Bluetooth.
Comment from Chris:
For those of you that are still having issues trying to play mp3 on your v3m, this is what I found out. You have to create a new folder on the micro SD card and name it . When you transfer your mp3s from your computer to the micro SD (great if you can use the SD adapter) you have to place your mp3s in that folder. This worked for me. Didn't have to change over to acc file. After inserting the micro SD card back into the phone you will have to select the Music icon, start application, and your mp3s should play.

Comment from don:
how do you make your mp3 songs to ringtones in the Sprint v3m? i have the songs in it and in the music player, but i dont know how to make it into my rington, thanks
Comment from Omar:
I think the ringtones have to be in .qcp format and in the audio folder. If you change the extension of an mp3 to qcp and then send it to the audio folder, it will work. On a mac use the browse device option to specify the audio folder.
I finally got my own MP3 to play as a ringtone on my Sprint V3m. First, on my PC I went to media-convert.com and converted it from an mp3 to a QPC. (You can use this site to edit the clip as well - it will let you find a specific piece of the song you want.) Then, save the QPC file to your PC.
Now, go to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php, and upload the file to your phone.
Once I did this, I was able to use whatever I wanted as a ringtone without the "handler error" message, and without paying for any other software.
Crista's comment explains the only way I found to get free ringtones on my Razr v3. I worked on this for 5 hours! Crista, I love you.
Actually, while crista is right in telling you to use http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/upload.php to send the files, you don't have to convert. I sent my ringtones as mp3 files and they work just fine - they're actually better quality of sound than the qcp files.
Do note that the mp3 files are much larger though.
HOW DO YOU CONNECT A MICRO SD CHIP FROM A SPRINT PHONE TO THE COMPUTER???
